Acceleration FAQs

What will the Accelerator Program look like?

The Accelerator is aimed at innovators from across the spectrum including startups, patients, doctorpreneurs, and corporate intrapreneurs. We are looking for innovation at the scale-up stage.

The Accelerator Program helps innovative healthcare ventures build the teams, skills, and connections needed to be successful. Ventures are selected on their promise and ability to meet challenges brought by DayOne partners.

What are the selection criteria and what ventures are eligible?

Individuals and teams from any country may apply to participate in the program. This also applies to individuals and teams which have registered a company with the commercial register or have founded a society. Registered companies and societies are also eligible.

The Accelerator consists of a number of specific themes each year, such as value-based healthcare (VBHC), patient-centered innovation and diabetes and metabolism in 2021, or pain management for the 2022 edition.

How does the selection process work?

Candidates must submit an application using the online form, available on the F6S platform, by the deadline [31.10.2021].

Shortlisted applicants will be notified by the selection deadline [mid-November] and invited for a session of virtual interviews with our Selection Committee [by end of November].

A final selection of 3 [three] innovators will then be made. The Accelerator Program will begin mid-January 2022 with mentoring, tailored coaching, and workshops lasting for 3 months and culminating with a Demo Day event.

Independently from the selection process, 3 [three] applicants chosen among the first 50 [fifty] ones will have the opportunity to present their innovative venture at the DayOne Conference on November 4 (virtual in 2021).

What projects do you not support?

We will not support basic research, therapeutic molecule discovery projects, or drug development projects (e.g. clinical trials of therapeutics). If you are unsure if your project will fit the criteria, please reach out to us by email.

Will I need to locate to Basel, Switzerland, to participate in the Accelerator?

Yes. The Accelerator Program will be 3 months of intense, hands-on activities and events to scale up your venture, with an initial boot camp on-site in Basel. The team’s physical presence in Basel will enable you to derive the most benefits. We strongly recommend the establishment of an entity in the cantons of Basel-Stadt, Basel-Landschaft, or Jura so that you can benefit from all the services of Basel Area Business & Innovation and other funding institutions during and after the program. The incorporation of a Swiss entity for non-Swiss applicants opens up significant opportunities for local funding and collaboration during and after the program. The incorporation of a Swiss entity is also likely to increase the ease with which you can attain a work permit.

Do I need a work permit to work in Switzerland?

If you live outside of Switzerland, and want to reside for longer than 3 months in Basel, you will require a permit. If you are an EU or non-EU national, you may want to write to the office directly to learn what you need for entrepreneurial work status in Basel at:

Consult this website for more information

Do you provide support for transport and accommodation costs?

Selected support will be provided to ventures to cover part of their costs for travel and accommodations for the initial boot camp inaugurating the DayOne Acceleration Program. This will be at the discretion of Basel Area Business & Innovation.

Do I have to attend the DayOne Conference? What happens there?

Yes, if you are one of the three ventures selected among the first 50 [fifty] applicants to the program, you will have to pitch in front of the audience as part of the Open Innovation session on November 4th, 2021.

Important note: being selected for the DayOne Conference does NOT guarantee your selection for the Accelerator Program. It simply offers visibility to your venture to thank you for your early interest in our program.
