DayOne Experts: Aging – the game changer for healthcare?
The aging population is on the rise – worldwide. According to the UN the number of people in the world aged 60 years or over is projected to double to 2.1 billion by 2050. In developed countries, more than one third of the population will be over 60 years by this time. The population over 80 will increase even faster to 434 million from 125 million today. Meanwhile the working age population, who are needed to pay or provide support of the elderly will only increase by about 25 percent over the same time.
There are two main drivers for this development: On the one hand, birth rates are declining and on the other hand, due to advances in healthcare, we will witness an increase in longevity. As positive as a longer and healthier life span is perceived for each individual, for our healthcare system and economy the rise of the aging population represents a stress test.
Innovation, both technological and on a societal level, is needed to face the challenge of a population that is growing older especially when this means living longer with health issues. New solutions are needed to help people to lead both longer and healthier lives, which includes better managing their conditions and hence decreasing the overall burden of aging for society. How can we make this work?
