Shanghai Biotalk: Digital Transformation in Healthcare

The future of healthcare will be a world dominated by data while the patient will have much more control. How do we get there? What have we achieved so far and what are the most promising applications? These and more questions were discussed during this year’s Basel-Shanghai Biotalk which took place in Shanghai on March 1, 2019. Speakers from the government and corporate field discussed the different approaches that Switzerland and China follow to advance and implement digitalization in healthcare. Lukas Engelberger, State Councillor and Head of the Department of Health of the canton of Basel-Stadt explained how his government is implementing a digital patient record system, one of the first in the German speaking part of Switzerland. Mr. WU Jinglei, Director General Shanhgai Public Health Commission presented the Shanghai government’s impressive efforts to digitalize the health care system. Basel and Shanghai enjoy a long-standing sister city partnership, and the University Hospital of Basel maintains a regular and fruitful exchange with several Shanghai hospitals.

Fast and accurate diagnostics

Mr. Christian Hein, Director Digital Products, Novartis showed how Novartis, one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies, is fully committed to digitalize all fields of their business, from research to clinical trials and production. He emphasized the significance to incentivize employees and departments to implement digitalization in their daily work. Finally, Ms. CHEN Yinan from 12 Sigma Technologies, a leading Chinese AI diagnostics company depicted how their company helps Chinese hospitals to generate more accurate and faster diagnoses based on the latest image recognition technology. The speakers then talked about different aspects of digitalization in healthcare during a panel discussion. They addressed issues like health data standardization, ethical questions around health data, talents and education.

The event was organized by, Novartis and the External Affairs and Marketing unit of the canton of Basel-Stadt with additional support from the Consulate General of Switzerland in Shanghai.
